We're thrilled to announce that two IWCA member wineries, Yealands Estate Wines and Sogrape, have achieved Gold and Silver membership, respectively—recognitions of their rigorous efforts to reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. We're also proud to welcome Domaine Bousquet as our newest Applicant member, and our first winery from Argentina! These inspiring wineries are at the forefront of our movement for climate action, joining our collective of 40+ wine producing companies across the world to drive decarbonization of the wine sector.
Yealands Estate Wines (New Zealand) Achieves IWCA’s Prestigious Gold Member Status
One of New Zealand’s best-known sustainable wine producers, Yealands Estate Wines, has become an IWCA Gold Member! The company joins the ranks of IWCA Gold Members Familia Torres (Spain), Jackson Family Wines (USA), Alma Carraovejas (Spain), Spottswoode Estate Vineyard & Winery (USA), and VSPT Wine Group (Chile).
To reach this milestone, Yealands met IWCA’s rigorous, industry-leading standards for climate action, including conducting regular third-party verified greenhouse gas emissions inventories across Scopes 1, 2, and 3; ensuring that at least 20% of their winemaking operations are powered by onsite renewable energy; and demonstrating a consistent reduction of emissions per liter of wine. As an IWCA Member, Yealands Estate Wines is committed to becoming Net Zero by 2050 across Scopes 1, 2, and 3 and meeting intermediate targets by 2030 in alignment with the United Nations’ Race to Zero campaign.
Mike Wentworth, GM Sustainability and Strategic Projects at Yealands Wine Group, comments:
“We are delighted that our team’s efforts in significantly reducing our greenhouse gas emissions have been recognized by IWCA through the achievement of Gold certification. This has been hard-earned and based on the efforts of many. It’s wonderful to be in the company of some truly exceptional wineries leading the wine industry’s response to climate change. We look forward to continuing this effort through our future actions and encourage other producers to do the same.”
Sogrape (Portugal) Reaches IWCA Silver Member Status
IWCA also is delighted to announce that Sogrape, top Portuguese wine and fortified wine producer, has reached Silver Member status, having joined IWCA as an Applicant in June 2022. (See our recent feature of Sogrape!) To achieve Silver status, Sogrape has completed a minimum baseline third-party-verified GHG emissions inventory and is committed to becoming net zero by 2050 across Scopes 1, 2, and 3.
Mafalda Guedes, Head of Corporate Communications & Sustainability at Sogrape and 4th generation of the founding family, shares:
“It is with great enthusiasm and responsibility that Sogrape moves forward in its commitment to IWCA's mission, having now achieved Silver Member status. Aligned with our Global Sustainability Approach, Seed the Future, this is an important step to promote a resilient and sustainable future for the wine industry. Dedicated to creating a stronger collective voice and joint action against the global challenges of climate change, we want to join the efforts of IWCA and its members in driving a positive impact and pave the way to a healthier planet.”
Welcoming New Applicant Winery Domaine Bousquet (Argentina)
Last but not least, we are thrilled to welcome our first Applicant member from Argentina: Domaine Bousquet, producers of organic wines from the Tupungato district of the Uco Valley in Argentina’s Mendoza region. Says Irma Remigio, Environment Coordinator and Biodynamics Management at Domaine Bousquet:
“We are looking forward to being part of a group that shares the same principles as us. Domaine Bousquet is committed to the continuous improvement of our environment as well as contributing through our experiences.”
