The International Wineries for Climate Action (IWCA) is proud to announce the launch of the IWCA SOC Sequestration Compilation, a groundbreaking global initiative aimed at establishing a science-based benchmark for Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) sequestration in the wine sector.

This ambitious project is being developed in close collaboration with IWCA Supporters: Asociación de Viticultura Regenerativa, The Porto Protocol Foundation and Regenerative Viticulture Foundation.

As the wine industry increasingly embraces regenerative viticulture and other carbon farming initiatives, scientific studies continue to demonstrate its positive impact on SOC sequestration. However, a comprehensive, data-driven reference that quantifies carbon sequestration potential across diverse vineyard contexts has been lacking—until now.

“This initiative is a milestone for the wine industry. It’s not just about measuring carbon: it’s about empowering wineries to take meaningful climate action based on real data, said Josep Ribas, IWCA founding board member. “By collaborating with our partners and compiling global evidence, we’re laying the foundation for a more transparent, science-driven approach to regenerative viticulture. The IWCA IWCA SOC Sequestration Compilation will help wineries understand the tangible benefits of soil health and carbon capture and ultimately accelerate the sector’s transition to climate-positive practices.

The IWCA SOC Sequestration* Compilation will aggregate real-world data from scientific studies and winery-led analyses across more than 10 winemaking countries. By creating a repository of projects, especially those conducted alongside research institutions, the initiative will serve as a critical resource for wineries seeking to implement carbon in-setting strategies and transition toward more sustainable practices.

Key objectives of the IWCA SOC Sequestration Compilation include:

  • Establishing a robust, science-based benchmark for SOC sequestration within the wine sector

  • Facilitating international knowledge sharing and best practices among wineries

  • Harmonizing methodologies used to calculate SOC sequestration

  • Supporting climate-resilient viticulture by promoting soil carbon enhancement strategies

Initial findings will be released in the first quarter of 2026.
