Wine retailers and IWCA launch free carbon calculator to help wine businesses start measuring emissions

Berry Bros. & Rudd and The Wine Society have joined forces with International Wineries for Climate Action (IWCA) to launch the Carbon Calculation Challenge 2026: an initiative designed to help wineries take a practical first step in measuring their greenhouse gas emissions.
Launching at the London Wine Fair, the initiative, with retailer-backed support, makes IWCA’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions calculator freely available to wine businesses of all sizes, anywhere in the world. The tool enables users to measure Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, helping businesses understand where emissions arise within their own operations and build confidence in carbon measurement.
The calculator has been deliberately designed as an accessible entry point, for those new to carbon accounting. By focusing on Scope 1 and 2 emissions — areas where data is most readily available and actions are most directly within a business’s control — the Challenge aims to lower the barriers that often prevent wine businesses from getting started with carbon measurement and reduction.
For businesses ready to go further, IWCA already offers free, robust calculators covering Scope 3 emissions, allowing participants to progress towards more complete value‑chain carbon measurement at their own pace.

Supporting producers to get started
Together, Berry Bros. & Rudd and The Wine Society work with hundreds of producers across diverse regions and scales. By backing the Carbon Calculation Challenge, the retailers aim to support producers who want to begin measuring emissions but lack the tools or confidence to do so independently.

IWCA will provide guidance and support to participating wineries throughout the Challenge, helping them interpret results, understand emission “hotspots”, and begin exploring practical opportunities for reduction as part of longer‑term climate planning. Participation in the Challenge is voluntary, and businesses retain ownership of their data.
