International Wineries for Climate Action (IWCA) is delighted to announce that Herdade Dos Grous, in Portugal, has achieved Gold Membership status.

Their efforts in ensuring that winemaking operations are powered by, at least, 20% of renewable

energy on site and demonstrating a consistent reduction of emissions per liter of wine means that they are one of the first Portuguese to gain the highest standards in carbon emission reduction.

“We are committed to shaping a future where sustainability and social responsibility are at the forefront of every bottle. Our ‘Manifesto’ is a declaration of shared values, our mission, and our unwavering dedication to making a positive difference in people’s lives and communities through our wines.” said Luís Duarte, Herdade dos Grous’s Director and Head Winemaker.

“We are delighted that Herdade dos Grous have achieved Gold membership of IWCA,” said Katie Jackson, President of IWCA. “In Alentejo, their success comes to reinforce the presence of IWCA.

As vine growers, we are severely suffering from the consequences of climate change, our duty to future generations is to act now. We hope that many more wineries, inside and outside our country, join our cause to accelerate the decarbonization of the wine industry.”

Since Herdade Dos Grous’ first carbon calculation the company has progressively reduced its GHG emissions, and the renewable energy produced covers 60% of our total energy needs, in 2024. This milestone underscores a major step forward, in uniting the wine sector around shared goals of decarbonization and environmental stewardship.

The IWCA Annual Report is published each November showcasing members’ individual efforts in their journey to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, giving an exclusive snapshot of how wineries are adopting innovative practices in the face of climate change. It is an essential read for commentators, opinion-formers, buyers, and fellow winery owners who appreciate the real need to tackle the climate crisis in the context of the long-term sustainability of the wine industry.
