International Wineries for Climate Action (IWCA) today announced the launch of its first-ever Soil
Organic Carbon (SOC) Sequestration Project Compilation, presented at Barcelona Wine Week
(BWW). Developed in collaboration with The Porto Protocol Foundation (PP), the Association of
Regenerative Viticulture (AVR), and the Regenerative Viticulture Foundation (RVF), this landmark
initiative provides the wine sector’s most comprehensive comparative analysis of SOC sequestration efforts to date.
As wineries worldwide accelerate their climate strategies, SOC sequestration has emerged as a critical pathway for reducing emissions and enhancing vineyard resilience. Yet the sector has long lacked standardized methodologies and consensus-based approaches necessary for ISO14064 validation and integration into corporate carbon inventories. IWCA’s new compilation directly addresses this gap.
A First-of-its-Kind Benchmark for the Wine Sector The compilation brings together sixteen SOC sequestration projects from twelve IWCA and Porto Protocol members across Europe and the Americas. Only projects with completed or near-complete results were included, ensuring a robust and credible foundation for comparison. Many additional wineries are expected to join future editions as their projects reach maturity.
Participating wineries represent leading wine regions, including:
Chile: Concha y Toro, Don Melchor, Miguel Torres Chile
Mexico: Clos de Tres Cantos Vineyards
France: Domaine Lafage
Spain: Alma Carraovejas, Familia Torres, Jean Leon, Can Feixes, Clos Mogador
United States (California): Archery Group, Chamisal Vineyards, Jackson Family Wines,
Paicines Ranch Vineyard, Pine Ridge Vineyards & in Maryland Dodon Vineyards
Key Findings
Across the projects analyzed, the compilation reveals:
Strong and growing engagement from wineries in measuring and enhancing soil carbon as part
of their climate mitigation strategies.
Consistent positive or neutral SOC trends under regenerative vineyard management practices,
reinforcing the potential of these approaches to transform vineyards into effective carbon sinks.
These early results underscore the promise of regenerative viticulture as a science-based tool for climate action and soil health improvement.
You can register to attend the event on the 2 nd February at 16:00-16:45
The panel discussing the results is comprised of:
Mireia Torres Maczassek, Director of R&D (Innovation & Knowledge) at Familia Torres, Familia Torres
Eva Navascués, R&D;I Director, Alma Carraovejas
Josep María Ribas, Climate Change Director, Familia Torres & IWCA Board Member
Anna Velázquez, Representing Association of Regenerative Viticulture
Antoine Lespès, Head of Research &Development, Domaine Lafage
A Foundation for Harmonization and Future Progress
By using a shared reporting template and standardized structure, the compilation enables clear
comparison across methodologies, locations, and outcomes. While the current edition focuses on comparative observation rather than quality assessment, it establishes a critical baseline for future harmonization.
The initiative aims to:
Create a science-based benchmark for SOC sequestration in the wine sector
Facilitate knowledge sharing and best practices among wineries worldwide
Support methodological alignment for SOC calculation
Accelerate the transition to more sustainable and climate-resilient viticulture
IWCA is a rapidly growing collective of wine-producing companies present in 15 countries across the globe. Representing approximately 3.5% of global wine production, its members form a unified voice for change, promoting reduction in carbon emissions and setting the standard for decarbonization internationally. The organization’s certification is recognized globally with retailers and industry professionals and authenticates winery action to promote emission reduction.
